Madrona Waterfront
“Can we have a swing in the space?” was one of the first questions from our new clients. From then, we knew it was going to be a fun project. A professional Seattle couple purchased this contemporary Olson Kundig waterfront home because it checked all the right boxes – enough space to host friends and family, a strong indoor-outdoor connection, and an exceptional view. What the space lacked was a sense of identity. They came to our studio with an empty house and a clear vision to create a welcoming home for entertaining that reflected their well-traveled lives and genuine love of art.
Art-integrated residential design does not always start at the beginning of a project, but here it did. From the first conversations, the clients knew they wanted pieces that meant something to them. We sourced art, lighting and furniture from Mexico, Morocco, and India anchoring different areas of the home. Each unique piece adds an extra layer to the home through textures and cultural depth. Taking the approach to select art and furnishings in tandem reflects full picture, thoughtful residential interior design.
The deep, muted color palette took its cues from the property and surroundings. Rusts, greens and blues move through the home in a way that echoes both the wooded tree line behind the house and the open water beyond it. Strong curves in the furniture are balanced against angular lines of the house, giving the rooms a sense of contrast that keeps the eye moving without feeling restless.
Custom-designed cabinetry was added to underutilized areas throughout, making the home as functional as it is beautiful. The result of this project is a home that lives as well as it looks, layered with personal meaning and designed specifically for this clients’ lifestyle. In the end it was just what they wanted. A mix of fun, practicality, beauty and art. The whole package…and a swing.
